911…11m talks about National identity in modern United States and Spain.
A juxtaposition of archival footage and urban landscape creates a poetic and powerful deconstruction of North American and Western European history: and how history affects us as civilians and as governments. While Spain’s history is shaped by the defeat and shame of civil war and a 40-year dictatorship, the history of the United States reflects military, economic and technological success. This film dissects these contrasting effects with respect to today’s pressing issues: patriotism, social history, anti-Americanism, justification of terror; provoking a self reflecting dialogue about our individual responsibilities in the current state of affairs.
Through the private reflections of Spanish and American expatriates living in New York and Madrid, respectively, the film provokes a stream of thoughts about our contemporary world and, most importantly, our place in the world as nations. Inocencio Arias, former Spain Ambassador to the UN; Luis Rojas Marcos, former president and CEO New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation;Bob Manzanares, Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires, Madrid US Embassy;Joshua Levitt, Financial Times correspondent in Madrid; Alfonso Armada, correspondent with ABC daily paper in New York; Tracy Rucinsky, correspondent AFX news Financial Journalist; and Paul Isbell, Senior Analyst at Real Instituto Elcano are featured among others.
