The Valladolid International Film Festival, one of Europe’s leading and most prestigous film festivals, is turning fifty and coming to New York to celebrate!
Through decades of varying cinematic trends and shifting political climates, Valladolid has remained truly committed to bringing the best in world cinema - past, present and future - to Spanish audiences. And as part of its anniversary festivities in Spain (October 21-29, 2005), the Festival wants to share its films with a New York audience. The New York celebrations include a special film series featuring five recent must-see Spanish works; from romantic comedies to incisive and thought-provoking dramas in an original and bold line-up that promises to touch, move and thrill audiences, while cherishing the festival’s true spirit. All feature films will be preceded by a spot specially made for the occasion by the Internationally acclaimed filmmaker Isabel Coixet.
We hope you’ll stop by downtown’s Tribeca Cinemas to congratulate Valladolid and make them feel welcome during their three-day stay on the New York Latino scene.
About the Valladolid International Film Festival
Since its creation in 1956, the Valladolid International Film Festival has been a major force behind the re-emergence of Spanish cinema worldwide. For the past fifty years, Valladolid has been characterized by its innovative programming and courageous spirit, fighting state censorship under Franco’s regime, and becoming one of world’s most prestigious film festivals. Valladolid has also been pivotal in introducing Spanish audiences to the work of some of the world’s essential filmmakers such as Ingmar Bergman, Luis Buñuel, François Truffaut, Andrzej Wajda, and Yilmaz Gürney. Consequently, on its anniversary Valladolid is not just taking the opportunity to look back, but also to look forward and prepare for its 100th anniversary!
The Regional Government of Castile and Leon is proud to be a part of the organization of 50th Anniversary of the Valladolid International Film Festival: Fifty Years Celebrating Spanish Cinema. The ongoing success of the festival in Spain, and its invitation to celebrate its 50th Anniversary in New York, demonstrates that Valladolid has made a name for itself on the International scene.
As a cultural organization dedicated to the development and promotion of film in the area, the Regional Government of Castile and Leon is pleased to be a financial partner for this event and many other film initiatives such as the Film Comission of Castile and Leon, an agency devoted to developing the film industry in the region by supplying audio-visual producers with the necessary assistance in logistics as well as artistic and professional support to make a film.
50th Anniversary of the Valladolid International Film Festival: Fifty Years Celebrating Spanish Cinema is made possible with the support of the Regional Government of Castile and Leon (Spain), ICAA, IndieWIRE and the collaboration of the New York International Latino Film Festival. A Pragda production. Special thanks to the participating filmmakers, producers, distributors and sales companies.
Thanks to New York International Latino Film Festival’s Calixto Chinchilla & Elizabeth Gardner for making this prestigious showcase possible.
Special thanks to H.E. Juan Vicente Herrera- President of Government of Castile and Leon (Spain), H.E. Silvia Clemente- Minister of Culture and Tourism of The Region of Castile and Leon (Spain), ICAA, Pragda, and IndieWIRE.
